Greece lowers F-16 upgrade ambitions
Greece is negotiating with the United States and Lockheed Martin on the modernisation of 85 Hellenic Air Force F-16 Block 52+/52+ Advanced fighters to the F-16V configuration, the Kathimerini daily reported on 24 February.
The talks are focused on the possibility of providing Greece more favourable payment conditions and a quick start to the project. The US offer for the upgrade is EUR1.25 billion (USD1.52 billion), according to the Athens-based newspaper.
Greece initially planned to upgrade 123 F-16s, including 38 Block 50 aircraft, reportedly resulting in a US EUR1.96 billion offer in 2017, far above the EUR1.1 billion budget allocated for the upgrade.
